I hope nobody gets too upset with me for wasting bandwidth. I just really
had to say "Thanks!" to everybody who has worked on PostgreSQL. I am using
it to get a better understanding of SQL, especially along with PHP for
writing dynamic Web sites. I haven't really done much, so I can't
contribute much here, but I will try as I get more knowledgable.
Just as an aside, since PostgreSQL did so well for me, I thought that it
would be interesting to try other SQL RDMS systems. I tried to install
Oracle 8i (downloaded from their Web site). I could never get it
installed. I started the install one morning before I went to work. When I
returned 10 hours later, it hadn't finished the installation and my system
was locked up (had to hit the reset button). I likewise tried installing
IBM's DB2, which I again downloaded from their site. The only good thing
that I can say is that at least the installation program didn't force a
reboot. It didn't work either (SIGSEGV). I know that others have had good
luck installing these other RDMS systems, but I'm totally sold on
PostgreSQL. I installed it from the RPMs in about 10 minutes (as I vaguely
recall). I know that others have posted bugs (as there are in all large
software projects), but so far, I haven't run into them.
Again, just a big "Thank You!" to all,
John
