Using pgAdmin3 I've tried this and variations on it. All are rejected.

select COMMENT ON TABLE articlestats

No answer here,

pgAdmin3 had no problem with entering a comment:

COMMENT ON TABLE articlestats IS 'Comprehensive data for every article.'
