I believe there's been some discussions in other forums as well, but
I'm not sure entirely how much past the initial one.

Also, there's no reason we can't have both a forward and a reverse
chronological order that one can switch between. (And then we can
bikeshed about which one is the default)

Um, isn't the thread oriented view the one that *is* the default?

Absolutely. We should not make any such changes if it makes it *worse*
for the cases where it works now. (FWIW, it also doesn't work too well
on very wide screns today -- the message view does, but not the list
views)
