Forgot to add: I think that the syntax would have to be more explicit.
It's too easy to mix up
SELECT * - b.a_id FROM ...
and
SELECT *, - b.a_id FROM ...
Maybe
SELECT * EXCEPT b.a_id FROM ...
?
