Out of curiosity, will you be doing this in such a way that

SELECT min(foo), max(foo) FROM bar

will end up as

SELECT (SELECT foo FROM bar ORDER BY foo ASC LIMIT 1), (SELECT ... DESC
LIMIT 1)

?
