Here's the patch, with the regression tests, documentation changes,
etc.
I still have one data type for both families, since that just makes
sense to me. If this must be reworked (even though there is a
family() function included) it probably won't happen anytime soon.
Can we get this reviewed and hopefully committed if the changes are
acceptable?
