The second argument is the salt, and you have not passed enough bits
for the default hash type.

i=> select crypt( '123', 'aa' );
crypt
---------------
aamrgyQfDFSHw
(1 row)

i=> select crypt( '123', 'a' );
ERROR: invalid salt
