unix/linux seems quite happy to ignore extra /'s ...

# ls -l /var/lib/pgsql/9.3/data//PG_VERSION
-rw-------. 1 postgres postgres 4 May 22 2014
/var/lib/pgsql/9.3/data//PG_VERSION
