Many individuals (distro maintainers) will have an init-script
that takes parameters ...
In slack (on my machines) it'll be
/etc/rc.d/rc.postgres (start|stop|reload)

In debian based systems
/etc/init.d/postgresql
(sometimes with postgresql-<version-mumble>)
