.bash_profile
PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/pgsql/bin:.
MANPATH=/usr/local/pgsql/man
PGLIB=/usr/local/pgsql/lib
PGDATA=/usr/local/pgsql/data
export PATH MANPATH PGLIB PGDATA

I source .bash_profile
then run
initdb

Since I've defined PGLIB & PGDATA in my env vars initdb doesn't complain and happliy chugg
s along until postmaster core dumps and destroys the data directory.
