I tried running postmaster again, this time with the -S option, and I was
able to get the database to work. I guess I was confused by the "5432
port" which I that might have been disabled on this system (a lot of
services have been turned off for security reasons). I was looking
everywhere else for clues.
Thanks for the hint; it was just what I needed.
Yes, I intend to upgrade. At this stage I jsut want to develop some
competence with some test data. Once I can see my way through this
project, I will upgrade.
