I'm getting an odd error in the configure scripts:

. . .
checking for gzcat... (cached) /usr/local/gnu/bin/gzcat
checking for perl... (cached) perl
configure: error: Can't find method to convert from upper to lower case
with tr

I'm compiling this in Red Hat 6.0
