My mistake.
I was connecting to remote machines and must have accidentally issued
the version on the same box :(

BSD is returning:

"PostgreSQL 8.1.5 on i386-portbld-freebsd6.1, compiled by GCC cc (GCC)
3.4.4 [FreeBSD] 20050518"
