too much postgres client open

Hi:
two questions:
how can i close some dead postgres conections?, if i restart postmaster it
kill some open conections too,
my conections are through odbc from a vb windows app. how can i see if a
conection it's dead?

i'm using postgresql 7.2 on Red Hat 7.2
