Thanks, so I could define the function like this - removed the (30):

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION public.testfunction(
     )
     RETURNS TABLE
     (
         Firstname character
     )
     LANGUAGE 'plpgsql'

I'll try the type definition and see if that helps.
