This is partly my fault, since I objected to the proposed refactoring
of path.c but didn't get around to offering a concrete alternative.
But I agree it's noncritical and a bit too late for 8.4.

I moved the entry to TODO, but maybe it should be on the next CommitFest
page instead? There were proposed patches submitted.
