As far as naming for rpms go. I have seen the following and it makes sense
to me.
package-[subpackage-]version-release.distro.arch.rpm
e.g.
postgresql-7.0.2-2.rh5.x.i386.rpm
postgresql-7.0.2-2.rh6.x.i386.rpm
postgresql-7.0.2-2.rh6.x.i686.rpm
postgresql-7.1-0.mandrake7.x.i386.rpm
postgresql-7.1-0.mandrake7.x.i586.rpm
postgresql-7.1-0.mandrake7.x.i686.rpm
Boy, wouldn't be great if they didn't have to be packaged for different
distro's .. :)
