I just did a little scruft hunt, and the only thing which is expendable
is 'regress', which is not really any good right now. (just doesn't
work, we need to redo it). Everything else has some kind of reasonable
purpose...
Generally, it as you said: this is a major feature and has a
concommitant quantity of code.
