Upgrading a 32-bit build to a 64-bit build

I can't seem to find an answer to this.

If I upgrade a 32-bit Postgres build to a 64-bit Postgres build (same
version), will the data files be compatible or do I have to do a dump and
restore of the database?

Is the answer the same for 8.1 and 8.2?
