FWIW, this is required by the x86-64 SYSV ABI. See

3.2.3 Parameter Passing. Aggregates with scalar types up to "two
eightbytes" are passed via registers.
It's also the case for MSVC / windows

Small aggregates (8, 16, 32, or 64 bits) are passed in registers.
