Title: Data Exchange
Speaker: Renee Miller (University of Toronto)
Abstract:
In data integration, an integrated, virtual view of a set of heterogeneous
sources is used for answering queries. Data integration is used widely in
federated systems and within mediator architectures. In such systems,
integration is virtual and data is transformed on-the-fly at query time. In
this talk, we present an alternative to data integration called data exchange.
We present some new results on data exchange that are providing the foundation
for understanding how data can be shared between autonomous and potentially
inconsistent data sources.

Bio:
Renee J. Miller is a professor of computer science at the University of Toronto
and the Bell Canada Associate Chair of Information Systems. She received the
1997 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), an
NSF CAREER Award, the Premier's Research Excellence Award, and an IBM Faculty
Award. Her research interests are in the efficient, effective use of large
volumes of complex, heterogeneous data. She received her PhD in Computer
Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and bachelor's degrees in
Mathematics and Cognitive Science from MIT.
