== PostgreSQL Weekly News - September 21st 2004 ==
PostgreSQL beta testing continued on the latest beta package. There was a
healthy number of bugs reported, which means we are getting closer to another
beta release, but also is a good indication that more testing is needed.
Some compiler problems in several contrib modules on win32, including dbase,
pgbench, pgcrypto, tsearch, and miscutil were fixed. Also on win32 a small
memory leak in psql was fixed and some problems in pltcl were fixed. In other
changes, the subtransaction handling code was restructured to reduce resource
consumption, to address a regression failure, and cure some memory leaks.
Also support for GNU/Hurd and GNU/*BSD was added.
The query-snapshot timing was was redesigned so that volatile functions in
READ COMMITTED mode see a fresh snapshot for each command in the function,
rather than using the latest interactive command's snapshot. This is a
non-backwards compatible change (at the request of many users) so it is
recommended those interested in this feature please test the next beta
thoroughly in this regard.
One last note this week is the welcoming of Peter Eisentraut to the
PostgreSQL Core Committe. Peter has been a lead developer on the
internationalization front and provided invaluable work in both the build and
release processes. Congratulations Peter!
