Installing PostgreSQL 6.3.2 on Linux

I'm trying to install PostgreSQL on Linux 5.

The postgres manuals say to type
./configure
gmake all >& make.log &
tail -f make.log
But the machine can't find gmake.
Ive tried typing make which starts but comes up with an error straight
away.

Can someone help me
