Do not install 9.2. It is out of support.

Use v10 or 9.6 (if you lean towards older versions).

Do not use the PostgreSQL that comes with the operating system,
use the binaries provided by the PostgreSQL project.

Sockets is the way to go on localhost if you can.

Just use "host=/tmp" (or wherever unix_socket_directories points on your server).
