Kris,

Yes I think branching first would be appropriate. Since 8.0 is now
production, stability should trump new features in the 8.0 branch.

Should we branch the 8.0 tree first? I squeezed in my last patch (with
new features) because it reinstated the old untyped null behavior which

thought was important. This patch doesn't seem to be in that same
category.
