I figured it out.

Redhat comes with postgresql already installed and ready to do. I had
downloaded the tar.gz file and attempted to install it. a "which postgres"
revealed that i was running the /usr/bin/postgres version instead of the
latest version in /usr/local/pgsql/bin/postgres.

Got it all up and running. Now, I'm going to try and install the jdbc
package so I can access postgresql from java. Any words of advice before I
go and do that?
